Remembrance Day in Canada
This November 11 falls on a Saturday and because of this schools and businesses will often move the day off to either the previous Friday or the following Monday. Not too shabby to get the extra day off. As I understand it this is not the way it plays out in some European countries and mores the pity for them.
The one thing about this system here in Canada is that it is pretty much up to the employer as to which day they give as the day off. This flexibility is a nice thing to have as some companies may have shipments arriving on either of those days so it is a good deal for them.
However, I don’t think that schools should be allowed to offer the same option. By way of an example I will use my kids and their schools. I have 1 child in elementary school, 1 child in middle school and 2 others that are in high school. All 4 children go to school in the same district and yet 2 of the children have the Friday off and the other 2 have the Monday off.
Seeing as the public education system is run by the government shouldn’t they all be under the same system as other government agencies? And if this isn’t possible then shouldn’t they all be at least united under 1 system for all schools in this province?
What’s next – different schools offering different summer holidays?
